FS8 Port Credit, Part 2: Designing the Wellness Experience

Overview

In Part 2 of the FS8 Port Credit build series, Westrose Construction shifts focus from the construction process to the finished wellness studio environment, examining some of the design decisions that shape the client experience. Bringing together reformer Pilates, yoga, and strength training under one roof, FS8 Port Credit reflects a growing shift toward hospitality-inspired wellness spaces where natural light, material restraint, and spatial flow are considered just as carefully as performance and function.

When people walk into FS8 Port Credit for the first time, they don’t just step inside another Pilates studio. The mood shifts immediately. The pace slows, the visual noise falls away, and the space begins doing what it was designed to do. That experience is not accidental. It is the result of careful construction, coordination, and a deep understanding of what today’s wellness environments are expected to deliver.

For Westrose Construction, the FS8 build in Port Credit was not simply a commercial fit-out. It was an exercise in translating a brand vision rooted in movement, community, and immersive experience into a physical environment designed to support all three.

The architectural and interior design direction for FS8 Port Credit was developed by Willmott & Strickland Architecture & Interiors, with Westrose Construction responsible for delivering the build and translating the design intent into a fully realized studio environment.

Seeing the Potential

The first thing that stood out was the amount of natural light and the overall openness of the space,” says Tom Martino, President of Westrose Construction. “Even in its original condition, you could immediately see the potential for it to become an elevated wellness environment.”

FS8 brings reformer Pilates, yoga, and strength training together within a single studio environment, creating distinct spatial and functional requirements during construction.

Because FS8 combines multiple training styles into one experience, the space needed to feel cohesive while still supporting different forms of movement and functionality,” Tom explains. “From a construction standpoint, that meant carefully coordinating layouts, flooring transitions, and lighting to accommodate a variety of uses.”

The goal was to create a space that felt immersive rather than institutional. Acoustic separation between zones, softened transitions from street to studio, and intuitive circulation all contribute to an environment designed to support both movement and recovery.

The Material Choices That Shape the Mood

One of the defining features of FS8 Port Credit is the restraint of its material palette. Exposed ceiling elements introduce a contemporary urban edge, while natural wood tones and softer finishes help create a warmer, more grounded environment.

Throughout construction, it was important that all of those elements worked together cohesively so the final result felt refined and welcoming rather than overly industrial,” says Tom.

Polished concrete flooring, integrated lighting, and nature-forward accents work together to create a studio that feels calming rather than clinical, a deliberate departure from the high-energy aesthetic often associated with traditional movement spaces.

When Fitness Becomes Hospitality

Today’s wellness studios are about much more than just the workout itself … they’re about the overall experience,” Tom notes. “The goal was to create a space where clients can step away from the hurried pace of their day and genuinely decompress, whether they’re attending a class, unwinding before or after a session, or connecting with the community.”

That shift has increasingly blurred the lines between wellness, hospitality, and lifestyle design. At FS8 Port Credit, lighting, circulation, amenities, and overall flow were all considered part of the client experience rather than secondary design elements.

Light, Connection, and a Sense of Place

Port Credit’s waterfront setting and strong neighbourhood identity also informed the overall feel of the studio.

Creating an environment that feels bright and connected to the surrounding community was incredibly important because it enhances the overall wellness experience,” Tom explains. “The openness helps create a calming mood throughout the studio while reinforcing a welcoming connection to the surrounding community.”

Natural light does more than brighten the studio. It supports circadian rhythm, energy levels, and the broader mind-body focus that underpins the FS8 concept.

Balancing Performance with Polish

For all its carefully considered design, FS8 Port Credit remains a high-performing movement studio first. The space must withstand constant daily use while still maintaining the calm, hospitality-driven feel central to the experience.

The key is making sure the space performs just as well as it looks,” says Tom. “We work closely with the client and trades throughout the process to ensure that all of the technical requirements are integrated in a way that still supports the overall vision.”

At 2,400 square feet, FS8 Port Credit was designed to support three distinct training modalities within one cohesive environment. “The most rewarding part has been watching the vision fully come to life,” reflects Tom. “Seeing the transformation from an empty shell into a polished studio environment has been incredibly satisfying for the entire team.”

FS8 Port Credit opens June 20th.
